Relation of parental age to rigidity in Huntington's disease.

چکیده

The birth ranks and parental ages at birth of subjects affected with Huntington's disease were ascertained from the literature and examined in relation to the neurological sign displayed (muscular rigidity or choreo-athetosis). With respect to the sex of the affected parent, the percentage of rigid cases was found to decrease linearly with advancing paternal age and to increase linearly with advancing maternal age. In contrast, no significant relation was found for birth rank or for age of the unaffected parent. The results could be explained in terms of the somatic gene-mutation theory of Burch by invoking a 'switching mechanism' which converts a predisposing autosomal allele for rigidity in the germ cell of affected fathers into one which is expressed as chorea. The converse mechanism is postulated to occur in affected mothers. Calculation showed that the hypothetical mutation rates were ofthe same magnitude in affected parents of each sex.

Parental factors associated with rigidity in Huntington's disease.

The discriminatory power of ten factors has been explored in relation to the presence or absence of muscular rigidity in patients with Huntington's disease. The sex and neurological sign of an affected parent were the only two significant determinants of rigidity or choreoathetosis in offspring. It was shown, using the Mantel-Haenszel method of adjusting for confounding variables that the risk ...

Patterns of inheritance of the symptoms of Huntington's disease suggestive of an effect of genomic imprinting.

The interaction of symptomatology (rigidity/chorea) in Huntington's disease (HD) with age of onset (AO) was examined using data from the Research Roster for Huntington's Disease Patients and Families. It was shown that AO varies between families and between paternal and maternal transmission and that rigidity is associated specifically with very early onset, major anticipation, paternal transmi...

The Measurement of Rigidity in Elbow Joint: An Objective Method for the Evaluation of Parkinson's disease

Introduction: One of the most common syndromes in Parkinson's disease (PD) is rigidity. Currently, an index is used to evaluate the level of PD by the clinical measurement of rigidity in the upper extremity. The index uses a subjective method called Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating System (UPDRS). The subjective nature of this method makes the influence of physician in the measurement of rigi...

Childhood and adolescent forms of Huntington's disease.

Huntington's original description of involuntary movements and dementia affecting certain families referred only to adults, although a juvenile or adolescent form (thought by some to be a separate clinical entity) has for long been associated with his name, despite attempts at reclassificaton. Myriantho-poulos (1966), for example, has suggested 'striato-cortical degeneration of children in fami...

Reduced basal ganglia blood flow and volume in pre-symptomatic, gene-tested persons at-risk for Huntington's disease.

The aim of this study was to examine basal ganglia volumes and regional cerebral blood flow in asymptomatic subjects at-risk for Huntington's disease who had undergone genetic testing. We determined which measures were the best 'markers' for the presence of the mutation and for the onset of symptoms. Twenty subjects who were Huntington's disease gene mutation-positive and 24 Huntington's diseas...
